An AC tune-up is the cheapest hour you’ll ever spend on your system, and the one most people skip until something breaks. In Winter Haven the unit runs close to year-round — there’s no real off-season to let parts cool down and recover — so the wear a northern system spreads across a decade lands here in a few seasons. A tune-up is where a weakening capacitor, a dirty coil, or a drain line starting to close gets caught while it’s still a note on an inspection sheet instead of a no-cooling call in July.
Once a year is the floor; in Florida’s climate, twice a year is closer to right — ideally before summer and before the heating season. Book one sooner if it’s been more than a year since the last visit, if your electric bill has crept up without your habits changing, if the air feels weaker or less cold than it used to, or if the system runs longer and longer to hit the same temperature. Those are all early signs of a system working harder than it should — the exact things a tune-up is meant to catch before they become a repair.
If the last visit is a blur and you can’t remember it, that by itself is a good reason to book one.
A visit runs about an hour to ninety minutes. We inspect the full system, clean the coils, and check and clear the condensate drain line — treating it against the black mold that Florida humidity grows — then confirm the refrigerant charge is where the manufacturer set it, not just “cold enough.” We test the electrical side the way failures actually happen here: capacitor and contactor readings, wiring for humidity-driven corrosion, amp draw on the compressor and motors. Then we calibrate the thermostat and check airflow. You get a written note on anything that’s wearing, so nothing gets fixed without you deciding it’s worth fixing.
None of it is upselling — catching a weak part in the spring is how you avoid paying for the emergency version of the same repair in July.
A tune-up is a scheduled service with a flat, upfront price — you know the number before we book it, and it covers the visit whether we’re out in an hour or find something that needs a longer look. If the tune-up turns up a repair, diagnostics and estimates are free Monday to Friday, 7am to 5pm, and you get a written price before any repair work starts. If you’re servicing the system twice a year anyway, our maintenance plans fold both visits in at a better rate than booking them one at a time.
