A ductless mini-split is an air conditioner that skips the ductwork entirely. One outdoor compressor connects to one or more indoor units, each mounted on a wall and each controlled on its own.
For a lot of Winter Haven homes that’s not a compromise — it’s the better system.
Your house has no ductwork. Plenty of older Winter Haven homes were built before central air was standard. Retrofitting ducts is invasive and expensive; a mini-split needs a three-inch hole through an exterior wall.
You’ve added on. A converted garage, a Florida room, a bonus room over the garage — spaces the existing system was never sized to cool. Extending ducts to them usually means the rest of the house cools worse.
One room never matches the rest. A west-facing bedroom that runs hot every afternoon, an office over the garage. A mini-split treats that room on its own instead of overcooling the whole house to fix one of them.
You’re only using part of the house. Cooling four bedrooms overnight when two are empty is a bill nobody needs.
Each indoor unit runs independently. Different rooms, different temperatures, and rooms nobody’s in stay off.
A single outdoor compressor supports multiple indoor units — typically up to eight — so a whole house can run on one system while still behaving like several. In a climate with eight months of cooling, not paying to cool empty rooms adds up.
There’s a second efficiency gain that’s specific to Florida. Central systems with ducts in an unconditioned attic lose a significant share of their cooling before it reaches the room, because that attic gets brutally hot. Ductless systems have no ducts to lose it in.
Most mini-split installations take one to two days. The indoor units mount high on the wall, the outdoor compressor sits outside, and a three-inch penetration carries the refrigerant lines, power and condensate drain between them.
Placement matters more than people expect in this climate:
Mini-splits get oversized constantly, and the consequence is the same as with central air: short cycling, poor humidity removal, a room that’s cold and clammy at once.
We run a load calculation for each zone, not one for the house. A west-facing bedroom and a shaded north bedroom of identical size need different capacities, and treating them the same is how you end up with one room right and one wrong.
The reasoning is the same one behind how we size any system.
A mini-split costs less than a full central system for a single zone, and multi-zone systems scale with the number of indoor units. The same financing applies — terms up to 120 months, energy-efficiency options where payments are offset by utility savings, and special options for veterans and senior citizens.
