Air conditioners don’t use refrigerant the way a car uses fuel. It circulates in a sealed loop and never gets consumed.
So if your system is low, it is leaking. Somewhere.
That matters because “adding a pound of Freon” is a repair that buys a few weeks and then costs you again — and every one of those top-ups vents refrigerant into the atmosphere and leaves the underlying fault untouched.

The signs are specific, and most of them look like something else at first:
If the system was recharged within the last year or two and is low again, there is a leak and it was never found.
We find the leak before we add anything. That is the whole difference between this and a top-up.
Our technicians carry electronic leak detectors and use nitrogen pressure testing to isolate where the loop has opened — a corroded line, a failed braze joint, a coil, a valve. In Winter Haven, humidity and salt in the air work on copper and on brazed connections year-round, so line-set and coil leaks are what we find most.
Then we repair it properly: the joint is re-brazed or the component replaced, the system is pressure-tested to confirm it holds, evacuated to remove moisture and air, and recharged by weight to the manufacturer’s specification — not by gauge pressure and judgment.
Everyone handling refrigerant here is EPA 608 Universal certified, which federal law requires and which not everyone offering a cheap recharge actually holds.
One thing worth saying plainly: the sealant cans and top-up kits sold in hardware stores are a bad idea on a residential system. Sealant circulates through the whole loop and can foul the metering device and the compressor, turning a line repair into a much larger one.
What it costs depends on where the leak is and what it takes to reach it. A line-set joint is straightforward. An evaporator coil buried in the air handler is a bigger job. And the refrigerant itself matters — older R-22 systems are expensive to recharge, because R-22 has been phased out and what remains is scarce.
That last point often changes the decision. On an aging R-22 system, the honest answer is sometimes that the money is better spent toward a replacement than a repair.
